This was made up of a central court (atrium) sur
rounded by a series of rooms used for a wide variety of purposes, including the bedrooms (cubicula), a dining room (triclinium), and a larger room (tablinum) facing onto a small garden (hortus), in which the family conducted its most important business.
A basin (impluvium) was set in the middle of the atrium to collect the rainwater that ran off the converging slopes of the roof. \par
